KPU Men's Soccer Set to Hold Spring Identification Camp
March 19-20, 2013
Kwantlen Polytechnic University Men's Soccer Program is pleased to announce the dates and times for their 2013 Identification camp for potential student-athletes in grade 11, 12 or high school graduates who are committed to pursuing post-secondary studies while participating on a varsity team.
The purpose of the camp is to provide a venue for athletes interested in post-secondary soccer to showcase themselves, and to receive feedback relative to the current Pacific Western Athletic Association (PACWEST) and Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) soccer standards.
Camp Sessions
Both sessions will be held at Surrey's premier soccer facility at Newton Athletic Park. Players are requested to bring a full soccer training kit for turf (i.e. no metal cleats) as well as a full water-bottle. Change rooms will be provided for each session.
Athletes must arrive no later than 15 minutes prior to the start of each session.

Time: 4pm - 5:30pm
SESSION #2:
Date: Wednesday, March 20, 2013
Location: Newton Athletic Park Turf Field #4 (7395 128th Street, Surrey)
Time: 6pm - 8pm
Registration Process:
1. Complete the Registration Form, located here
2. All registrations will be reviewed and athletes will be selected based on their background in the sport, their potential to compete at the collegiate level and their commitment to attending all the sessions.
3. Once reviewed, players will receive a confirmation email and any/all last minute information pertaining to the sessions.

KPU Eagles Name Srdjan Djekanovic as Men's Soccer Head Coach
Metro Vancouver, BC (February 5, 2013)—The Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) Eagles Athletics Program is pleased to announce that Srdjan Djekanovic has been named the head coach of the men’s soccer program.
Djekanovic, a University of British Columbia (UBC) graduate and former starting goalkeeper for the UBC Thunderbirds, moved to B.C from Belgrade, Serbia in the early 90’s. Graduating with two degrees from UBC (Arts, Education), he holds a USA Soccer Federation “B” National License and currently works as a teacher within the Coquitlam School District.
In his youth, Srdjan was a member of the BC Provincial Team program at the U14, U15 and U17 level(s). Prior to starting his coaching career, he celebrated a lot of success as a player. From 2001-2003, he was a member of the Canadian U-20 National Soccer Team. In 2005 he was the starting goalkeeper for the UBC T-Birds, and assisted the team in winning their first CIS national championship since 1994. In 2006, he was named CIS All-Canadian 2nd Team and Canada West 1st Team after leading the conference with a 0.78 goals-against-average and a 0.851 save percentage. In 2007, he was a member of the UBC T-Birds Men’s Soccer Team who won the CIS Championships, with a 2-1 win over Laval. In 2010, he was a member of the Canadian National Team.
Srdjan was the first professional soccer player to have played for all three Canadian Professional soccer teams (Vancouver Whitecaps, Toronto FC and Montreal Impact), and won championships with two of the three clubs (Whitecaps in 2006, Montreal in 2009).
“I am excited to join the KPU Athletics Program,” said Srdjan Djekanovic. “I look forward to working with the players to make the Eagles men’s soccer program one of the top programs in the country.”
“Srdjan brings a vast amount of experience to the Eagles; as a student-athlete, professional athlete and coach, which will be a great asset for our players in their development, said Elise Le Brun,” KPU’s Director, Athletics and Recreation. Not only that, his passion for the game and his firm belief in the importance of lifelong learning makes him a great fit for the KPU Eagles Program.”
Srdjan’s coaching career began in 2006 when he was a student-athlete on the UBC Thunderbirds men’s soccer team, assisting head coach Mike Mosher with the delivery of UBC Soccer camps.
Over the past three years, Srdjan has held the role of Assistant Coach with the UBC Men’s Soccer Team (2012 CIS gold medallists); Head Coach of the Fusion FC U-17 Boys Coach and U17/18 Girls, Head Coach of the Revolution FC All-Stars; USL Super 20’s and Central City Breakers Boys U-18. He is also the Director and Head Coach of Primo Sports, Soccer Academy.

Eagles Men's Soccer Season Draws to a Close in Squamish
(Metro Vancouver) - After a thrilling last game of the season in Squamish (October 21)which resulted in the Kwantlen Eagles Men’s Soccer Team qualifying for Provincial Championships, the Eagles returned to Squamish this past weekend as the fourth and final ranked team to compete in the 2012 PACWEST Provincial Soccer Championships, hosted by Quest University.
At the end of the regular season games, fourth-ranked Kwantlen Eagles were matched up against first-ranked Douglas College Royals in the semi-final match. The Royals were first to the scoreboard when a smartly executed corner kick in the 20th minute opened up the game. The Royals responded a second time 10 minutes later with a dribble past the Eagles’ backline to go into the half with a 2-0 lead. The second half showed great intensity and back-and-forth ball movement up and down the pitch from both teams. It was not until the end of the game when some rapid fire goals from both teams would solidify the result. The Royals started the seesaw battle in the 83rd minute with a shot from an awkward angle to beat Eagle goalie, Kevin Shaheri (Richmond). However, it was only a short minute later when Eagles’ forward, Jacob Starheim (Delta) would take the ball and dribble past two centre backs and execute a perfect strike to put the Eagles on the board for the first time in the match. In the 88th minute, Douglas would penetrate the Eagles’ defense once again for their fourth goal of the game and end the game at a 4-1 score. Kevin Taheri was named the Player of the Game for the Eagles.
After a disappointing semi-final result, the Eagles qualified to play in the bronze medal game against 3rd-ranked Thompson Rivers University (TRU) Wolfpack on Sunday, October 28th. The Wolfpack opened up the floodgates early scoring their first goal in the first fifteen minutes. The opening goal came from a header off of a scrambled ball from just inside the Eagles’ box. Only a minute later, an unlucky bounce beat Eagles’ goalie, Kyle Nairn (Delta), to put the Wolfpack up to a quick 2-0 lead. Second-year forward, Marcos Da Silva (Burnaby), quickly responded with a perfect strike past the TRU keeper to help the Eagles get within reach, but it was short-lived when the Wolfpack responded again and closed off the half with a 2 goal lead (3-1). Entering the second-half, the scoreboard saw 1 goal to the Eagles off a penalty kick from second-year forward, Murtada AlMatrood (Burnaby), but it wasn’t enough to bridge the gap that had been created by the Wolfpack, who added 3 additional goals to their score, for a 6-2 result at the final whistle and a 4th place final finish for the Eagles. Marcos Da Silva was awarded the Player of the Game for the Eagles.

Eagles Named to PACWEST Soccer All-Star Teams
(Metro Vancouver) – In advance of the upcoming 2012 Soccer Provincial Championships hosted by Quest University in Squamish, the PACWEST has announced the All-Star Teams for the 2012-2013 Season with a number of Eagles on the list.
The Eagles saw two veteran athletes with stellar seasons be named to the PACWEST First Team All-Stars. Second-year forward and Bachelor of Business Administration – Entrepreneurial Leadership student, Murtada AlMatrood (Burnaby) led the way on the All-Star list. Almatrood led the Eagles on the PACWEST Scoring Leaders ranking list in fifth place in the league notching 6 goals for the season in 13 games played and an average of 2 goals/game. Murtada was also named PACWEST Athlete of the Week in the first week of league play and also Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Male Athlete of the Week for the same time frame.
Teammate and fellow forward athlete, Jacob Starheim (Delta), was also named to the First Team All-Star list. Jake, a third-year Eagle and Associate of Arts student, was also named on the PACWEST Scoring Leaders list for the past season in 11th place with 5 goals scored in 14 games played. A dynamic player with lightning speed, Jake scored crucial goals for the Eagles when called upon including the winning goal this past weekend against Quest University to solidify the Eagles playoff spots at the upcoming Provincial Championships. A third Eagle was also named to the All-Star list. First-year defender and mid-fielder, Leroy Kusina (Surrey), had a break-out year for the Eagles. Leroy continually supported his teammates and was a leading factor in the defensive play that kept the Eagles in multiple games throughout the season and denied many opponents at the Eagles net.
As well, Kwantlen is proud to announce that Men’s Eagles Head Coach, Ajit Braich, was named PACWEST Men’s Soccer Coach of the Year. In his third-year as head coach with the Eagles Soccer Program, Ajit has led the team from 6th place and a (4W-3T-5L) record in 2011 to capture the fourth spot in the 2012-2013 year with a season’s record of (6W-5T-3L) in 14 league games.
