Interview and Portfolio Review
Please read, consider, and respond to all six of these criteria when preparing your portfolio materials for your interview and portfolio review for admission to the interior design program. Each criteria is evaluated during these processes, so the better you understand and respond, the greater the likelihood of your admission to the program.
Creative Skills and Problem Solving Skills
Value: 35
The Profession requires this because:
Designers are required to use a variety of thinking skills such as lateral thinking and other creative thinking techniques to help define and articulate problems and create solutions.

Portfolio items showing evidence of having utilized problem solving and creative skills.
We are looking for:
Creativity: Evidence of innovation, originality, elaboration, depth of detail, flexibility, usefulness, value.
Problem Solving: Abilities to articulate / define problems and show solution(s) to problems.
Drawing and Visual Skills and Craftsmanship
Value: 30
The Profession requires this because:
Designers use various visual communication skills such as drawing and model making to understand, translate, interpret and communicate design concepts and solutions.
Show us the following:
Portfolio items showing one or more of the following to show drawing and visual communication skills, and craftsmanship skills:
Sketchbook, Freehand drawings, Paintings, Prints, Photographs, Technical drawings, Drafting, Model building, Furniture making, Construction work, etc?
We are looking for:
Freehand Drawing: Evidence of visual expression, accuracy, precision, realism.
Mechanical Drawing: Evidence of measured drawings/drafting, understanding of orthographics, spatial understanding.
Visual Literacy: Demonstration of visual composition and communication skills, evidence of 2D and 3D exploration.
Craft: Evidence of attention to detail and quality.
Digital Literacy
Value: 05
The Profession requires this because:
Designers use digital technologies to research, record, design, draw and market services.
Show us the following:
One or more of the following:
Word processing, CAD drafting and drawing, Photoshop, examples of file transfer and any other digital technologies.
We are looking for:
Evidence of skills using a variety of software and hardware.
English Language Proficiency
Value: 10
The Profession requires this because:
Designers require strong oral and written communication skills to effectively present their ideas, communicate with various professional consultants on a project, and be articulate on matters of technical knowledge and business.

Samples of written documents.
We are looking for:
English - Written: Confirmation of ability to succeed in the upper years of a bachelor degree program.
English - Oral: Ability to clearly and comfortably communicate verbally.
Awareness of the Interior Design Profession
Value: 10
The Profession requires this because:
Designers base decisions on their awareness of the Interior Design Profession and must have a clear understanding of the profession in which they practice.
Show us the following:
Questionnaire stating interest and intent in the Interior Design Profession. (Questionnaire is provided after admission process, and prior to portfolio review)
Items showing research about the Interior Design Profession such as:
Journal or file of interior design reading Information about Vancouver-based, or broader, designers, and companies, including description of their work.
We are looking for:
Your answers to the questionnaire. (Questionnaire is provided after admission process, and prior to portfolio review)
A variety of Items, topics and depth of exploration and research of Interior Design.
Your understanding of the profession by asking you questions.
Life Skills
Value: 10
The Profession requires this because:
People in all areas of the Interior Design profession work in teams and as well as independently. Successful Interior Designers generally have excellent personal management skills and a high level of commitment and passion for their profession.
