General Crime & Justice Statistics
Statistics Canada (Statcan) and the Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics (CCJS) - which is part of Statcan - are the main sources of crime and justice statistics in Canada. They gather data from police reports, court administrative records, and surveys. They publish many useful sources, including detailed statistical tables, journal articles and special reports. Here are a few places to start your search:
- Canada Year Book (annual) - includes brief overview of crime and justice statistics each year
- Statistics Canada's Crime and Justice site:
- This site pulls together many different Statcan and CCJS tables, articles and reports in broad categories:
General ; Civil courts and family law ; Correctional services ; Crimes and offences ; Criminal courts ; Family violence ; Justice system spending ; Legal aid ; and Victims and victimization - Juristat (8 to 10 issues per year, since 1981)
-
Each issue of this CCJS journal focuses on a specific theme (eg. homicide; female offenders). Volumes since 1996 are available online. Earlier issues are available in print in the Reference Collection at Surrey, Richmond and Langley campuses. [Call number: REF JL 183 J87]
You can browse a list of its issues by date or by (very) broad subject .
For more detailed subject searches, try the Juristat Index developed by the University of Toronto. It covers all Juristat issues, but only indicates which issue has an article. It does not link to the articles. - Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics (CCJS) Profile Series
- These periodic reports provide "analysis on a variety of topics and issues concerning victimization, offending and public perceptions of crime and the justice system. The profiles primarily draw on results from the General Social Survey on victimization. Where applicable, they also incorporate information from other data sources, such as the Census of the Population and the Incident-based Uniform Crime Reporting Survey." - Crime and Justice Research Paper Series
These occasional CCJS reports "explore a wide range of topics covering criminal victimization, youth and adult offending, the administration of justice, and the perception of the justice system and crime in Canadian communities." - Books
The Kwantlen Library catalogue lists many books, government reports and other resources related to Canadian crime and criminal justice statistics, many of which are available online. They usually have one of the following subject headings:

- Female Offenders in Canada
"Using administrative data, this [issue of the CCJS journal] Juristat [vol. 28, no. 1, 2008] is intended to provide a profile of female offenders in Canada. Police-reported data are used to present information on the nature and extent of crime among female youth and adults in 2005 and then examine trends in the rate of female youth and adults charged by police with violent and property offences from 1986 to 2005. Data are compared with crime rates among male youth and adults to illustrate differences in levels and patterns of offending. The report also examines the processing of female youth and adults through the courts and provides characteristics of adult females under federal and provincial/territorial corrections. Again, comparisons are drawn with court activity involving males and with adults males under correctional services." - Women Offender Statistical Overview , 2003

The report pulls together previously released data from victimization surveys, police services, courts and service agencies to assess the nature of violence against women. It addresses its impact, associated risk factors, institutional and community responses and the use of services by victims. The report updates a 2002 report titled Assessing Violence Against Women: A Statistical Profile, which introduced a number of violence indicators. It expands on these indicators, organizing them into five central themes: prevalence and severity; impact; risk factors for violence; institutional and community-based responses; and victims' use of services."
