Kwantlen Student Association pledges over $50,000 to the Kwantlen Foundation

(SURREY, B.C.) The Kwantlen University College Student Association (KSA) has pledged over $50,000 in support of scholarships, awards and bursaries for Kwantlen students.

“We are currently supporting young parents through our annual budget, but wanted to do something more permanent. With matching funds from the Kwantlen Foundation, our $46,000 gift will become a $66,000 endowment fund, generating over $3,000 per year in emergency assistance for our student parents,” remarked Steven Lee, KSA director of finance. “Having dependants while going to school can be a financial strain. This fund will help those students by providing a little extra support when it’s needed most.”

$46,000 will be designated to an endowed emergency fund for student parents and $10,000 will support the ‘KSA Embracing a Challenge’ awards for students with disabilities, for a total donation of $56,000.

“We’re grateful that the KSA has chosen its student members as the recipients of this money. As students themselves, they know as well as anyone how difficult it can be to make ends meet while attending school. They were thoughtful in the selection of the criteria and we commend them for their generosity and foresight,” said Jeff Norris, executive director for the Kwantlen University College Foundation.

In addition to the parents emergency fund, $10,000 will also be directed to an award that was first established in 2006 by the KSA. The ‘Embracing a Challenge’ award for students with disabilities rewards and celebrates the successes of students who have overcome significant barriers in attending university. Also matched by the Foundation, this $20,000 will create an additional $1,000 annual award.
