Kwantlen University College present a plethora of design at the Roundhouse

(VANCOUVER, B.C.) For three weeks, Kwantlen University College Centre for Applied Design and Communications will present a series of workshops, movies, lectures and discussions -- on all types of design including fashion, interior, graphic and interdisciplinary -- that will surely enhance skills, challenge the mind and explore new possibilities in design. The show will be exhibited at the Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Centre from April 20 to May 10.

“The goal of the Centre for Design and Communications Show is to create a space for cross-disciplinary dialogue between different fields of design and communication” said Katie Warfield, journalism instructor at Kwantlen. “Where graphic designers rub elbows with journalists, these sorts of opportunities lead to really rich discussions and hopefully really rich relationships down the road.”

See the documentary of Arthur Erickson’s philosophy and work, or attend a workshop on Drawing the Architectural Environment . Groups can book more formal tours and explore displays, photos and creative work and fashion from students in graphic design, journalism, fashion and interior design. There will be student panel discussions ranging from Designing for the Body to issues about sustainability and designing for human needs vs. human desires. Through discussions, participation will be encouraged from other institutions to touch on important issues in graphic design.

Ken Hughes, coordinator and faculty for the Graphic Design for Marketing Program explains, “The focus of the Roundhouse Project is to present a series of events that explore the connections between fields of design and communications: how these two broad activities are central to our lives as human beings.”

Fashion exploration can be seen on May 3 and students will especially want to take advantage of the Salazar Student Awards on May 9. World-renown graphic designer, Stefan Sagmeister, is scheduled to speak at the awards, followed by a small celebration and the opportunity for students to network with leading industry professionals.

“Design isn’t just a visual activity, but involves planning, strategy, innovation and technology,” notes Hughes. “The uniqueness of our program is its integration of marketing into the design equation.”
