Kwantlen receives $10,000 endowment from Third Age Learning at Kwantlen program
(SURREY, B.C.) The Third Age Learning at Kwantlen (TALK) program has provided a $10,000 endowment fund to give financial assistance to mature students enrolled in post-secondary studies at Kwantlen University College.
"The TALK program participants have given us a remarkable opportunity to reward a mature student for their hard work and determination. They were thoughtful in the selection of the criteria and we commend them for their generosity and foresight,” said Jeff Norris, executive director of Kwantlen University College Foundation.
The $10,000 donation was matched by the Kwantlen University College Foundation for a total endowment of $20,000. This will generate an annual bursary of $1,000 for a mature student. The award will be given out for the first time in 2009 to honour TALK’s 10th anniversary.
"We wanted to create this award in celebration of our upcoming 10th anniversary,” said Joanne Cunningham, TALK chair, “and to thank Kwantlen for its incredible support over the years.”
The TALK program provides those over 50 with creative and stimulating educational activities. It was first initiated in 1997 when Joanne Cunningham, a former Kwantlen faculty member and the current TALK Chair, submitted a proposal to the Presidential Advisory Committee. It was endorsed and the first course was offered in April 1999. It currently has more than 300 members.
The annual TALK membership fee is $20 and entitles members to participate in courses, use the Kwantlen libraries, and receive information and brochures regarding lectures and special events. There are also social events held throughout the year, which runs from September to August.
On April 28th, TALK is hosting Bard on the Beach, a special event for members and non-members alike. Bard actor and director, David Mackay, will give insights into the plays, Twelfth Night and King Lear. For more information about this event and the TALK program, visit kwantlen.ca/talk
The Kwantlen Foundation was established in 2000 and raises funds to create quality, life-long learning opportunities for Kwantlen students to achieve personal, social and career success. For more information or to make a donation, visit kwantlen.ca/foundation or call 604.599.2010.
