Kwantlen honours Surrey graduate with President’s Outstanding Graduate Award

(SURREY, B.C.) Marketing management diploma graduate, Talia Beckett received the President’s Outstanding Graduate award at Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s 2008 Convocation ceremony held at Kwantlen’s Surrey Campus.

Presented annually, this award encourages Kwantlen students to excel in their chosen fields of study and to participate in university, student and community activities to the benefit of others. Recipients have completed all their study in one program at Kwantlen; have consistently shown outstanding ability in the field; have contributed in a significant way to Kwantlen or community affairs; and may be recommended by faculty.

Receiving the President’s Outstanding Graduate award is one of many academic accomplishments Talia Beckett, marketing management diploma graduate, has received during her time at Kwantlen. Beckett is now bridging her diploma and working towards a Bachelor of Business Administration in Entrepreneurial Leadership.

As the only person in her immediate family to study at a post-secondary level, Beckett has set the bar high, taking part in many Kwantlen organizations. Beckett remarked, “I chose Kwantlen because of the small class sizes, engaging teachers and because it’s close to home. However, most importantly, I applied to Kwantlen because it was affordable and there were lots of opportunities to become involved in the school.”

Her dedicated involvement at Kwantlen is evident, as she explained, “I believe that regular community involvement is essential to my personal development.” Beckett serves as a strong team player on the President’s Ambassadorial Team, participated in a United Nations exchange program to Finland and completed her cooperative education program with the Surrey Board of Trade.

Earlier this year, Beckett received the B.C. Export Award in recognition of her leadership, commitment to international and business studies, and contributions to B.C.’s export community.

When asked what her future goals are, this Surrey resident remarked, “After I complete my degree, I would like to obtain a master’s degree in intercultural communications.” Beckett added, “My dream job would be as an international public relations manager for an organization solely focused on international trade.”

Kwantlen’s mission is to create an exceptional undergraduate learning environment committed to preparing learners for leadership, service and success. On April 22, 2008, B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell officially announced university status for Kwantlen, renaming us Kwantlen Polytechnic University. Legislation is required to enable the transition in status and we expect to begin the 2008 academic year under our new name and new identity. In the meantime, we will be changing our name for marketing purposes but not for legal or contractual matters.
