Kwantlen honours Burnaby graduate with George C. Wootton Award

(BURNABY, B.C.) Bachelor of Applied Arts in Psychology (Honours) degree graduate, Levente Orban received the George C. Wootton award at Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s 2008 Convocation ceremony held at Kwantlen’s Surrey Campus.

Kwantlen’s Board of Governors established this award to recognize outstanding dedication, service and contribution to the university system. This award considers a student’s contribution to the community, Kwantlen or voluntary activities as well as academic success.

Levente Orban’s road to Kwantlen and his Bachelor of Applied Arts in Psychology (Honours) has been paved with hard work and dedication.

Key to Orban’s success was participating in extracurricular activities at Kwantlen. He explained, “I have been involved with the Kwantlen Psychology Society since 2004. I served as the web administrator, then vice president and currently serve as president.” Orban added, “My grades skyrocketed after getting involved with the Kwantlen Psychology Society.”

In addition to being involved with the Kwantlen Psychology Society, Orban has been employed as a research assistant for the Student Life and Development department at Kwantlen.

“Working at Kwantlen and being a full-time student was a superb experience,” adding, “I not only managed my time better, but this opportunity gave me a unique chance to apply the skills I learned in classes, in a real setting and with real consequences.”

When asked how this award will help him achieve his future goals Orban replied, “This prestigious award will be very helpful as I enter the next stage of my studies.”

This Hungarian native and Burnaby resident will be heading to the University of Ottawa this fall to begin his master’s/PhD program where he will be researching and exploring the co-evolution of bees and plants.

“I feel grateful for the knowledge, skills and experience my professors have unselfishly taught and shared with me. My success is largely a result of their tireless teaching and support.”

Orban's three pieces of advice for Kwantlen students: “Take your time and don’t rush through your program; get involved in your departmental club and other extracurricular activities; and don’t stress about the grades—focus on learning instead.”

Kwantlen’s mission is to create an exceptional undergraduate learning environment committed to preparing learners for leadership, service and success. On April 22, 2008, B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell officially announced university status for Kwantlen, renaming us Kwantlen Polytechnic University. Legislation is required to enable the transition in status and we expect to begin the 2008 academic year under our new name and new identity. In the meantime, we will be changing our name for marketing purposes but not for legal or contractual matters.
