Kwantlen “bolts down” donation by local companies

(SURREY/CLOVERDALE, B.C.) Kwantlen Polytechnic University's trades and technology students practice their skills and techniques on a new structural steel teaching aid donated by a local group of companies from the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction (CISC).

“This donation speaks highly about the future of structural steel teaching at Kwantlen’s Cloverdale Campus and how our programs prepare students with career-ready skills,” said Robert Finlayson, metal fabrication instructor. “This was a great joint effort by industry partners, Kwantlen faculty and students.”

The first phase of this project gave students from carpentry, welding, metal fabrication, CADD/drafting, millwright, and masonry a chance to assemble the new training aid.

The steel erection was supervised by Gary Cameron, Solid Rock Steel Fabricating's ironworker foreman, who worked with a number of Kwantlen students in small groups, over two days to erect 2.5 metric tons of structural steel through the use of lifting beam and hand operated chain blocks to position the top pieces.

The materials were supplied by Dymin Steel Western Inc., Reliable Tube Inc., and Custom Plate and Profiles Inc. The fabrication was done by Canron/Supreme Group and George Third & Son Ltd., and the coating and galvanizing was completed by Silver City Galvanizing Inc.

Plans for the second phase of this project are being organized for classes starting in August and September, which will include student working collaboratively to design and produce metal products.
