(SURREY, B.C.) Kwantlen Polytechnic University co-operative education student, Crystal Lin, is enjoying an experience of a lifetime working as a B.C.-Canada Pavilion Host at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games for her summer work placement."Crystal competed for this position with a large number of students from other B.C. post-secondary institutions. We were thrilled to hear that she was selected for such a prestigious and rewarding position. Not only is she gaining invaluable co-op work experience, the opportunity to experience work internationally will serve her well in future endeavours," stated Bevin Heath Ansley, associate dean of learner resources.
This work term is helping Lin prepare for her future goal of becoming a human resources manager by providing her with first-hand working experience in a large international organization.
“This experience is giving me the skills to handle different types of situations, such as handling different environments, adjusting quickly to new things, and handling ad-hoc situations,” said Lin, a human resources management degree student.
Lin adds, “Kwantlen's co-op program is a fantastic program for anyone looking to gain some working experience before graduation and going into the workforce. Also, students will be able to graduate with co-op recognition on their degree, which in some fields, such as business, is very important to employers. I know my co-op experience will separate me from the rest of the applicants applying for the same job.”
The B.C.-Canada Pavilion is a $3-million project that has been established in Beijing, China to showcase Canada’s business opportunities, cultural diversity and tourism industry during the 2008 Summer Olympics. Here, Lin will be educating people about B.C. and Canada, inform them of popular B.C. tourist sites, B.C.’s natural resources and Canada’s education system.
Kwantlen’s co-op program integrates periods of on-campus study with periods of paid, career-related work experience. It provides students with the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge to on-the-job experiences. For more information about co-op at Kwantlen, visit: kwantlen.ca/coop
