Outgoing Students (Exchange/Field Schools/Other)
All outgoing students are required to have insurance coverage for the duration of their time abroad.
If you are part of the KSA extended health and dental plan, travel medical insurance is included as part of this plan. Please contact the KSA benefits office to determine whether or not this coverage meets your needs.
If you are not a part of the KSA extended health and dental plan, you can purchase insurance through the Kwantlen Insurance Plan.
Incoming Exchange/Visiting Students
Students coming to Kwantlen as exchange or visiting students are required to have insurance coverage for the duration of their stay in Canada. It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that they are properly covered for the duration of their stay and Kwantlen assumes no responsibility in the event of a medical emergency.
Students staying for one semester
Students staying for one semester will need to purchase insurance for the entire duration of their stay either through Kwantlen or another insurer. To purchase insurance through Kwantlen, please visit Kwantlen Insurance Plan.
Students staying for more than 6 months
For students who are planning to stay in the province of British Columbia for more than 6 months of the year, it is mandatory that you enrol in the British Columbia Medical Services Plan (MSP). You must apply within the first 10 days of your arrival in BC. The waiting period to receive this coverage is 3 months. You must arrange to get short-term basic medical insurance coverage from an alternate health insurance provider during this waiting period.

International Students
Extended Medical and Dental Coverage: International students in full-time studies at Kwantlen are automatically enrolled in the Kwantlen Student Association Benefits Plan. This is a mandatory extended health and dental plan that supplements the BC Medical Services Plan. It provides 12 month of coverage starting on the first day of the month the program of study begins. Please see www.kusa.ca for further information or visit the Benefits Office in the KSA office on any campus.
NEW! Please Read: MSP Coverage: For international students who are planning to stay in the province of British Columbia for more than 6 months of the year, it is mandatory that you enrol in the British Columbia Medical Services Plan (MSP). You are well covered with Kwantlen travel insurance.
The Kwantlen travel insurance plan is top quality insurance coverage provided at a low cost for the three-month waiting period before you qualify for the BC Medical Services Plan (MSP).
Can my family member get coverage?
If you have a spouse or partner and/or dependent children who will reside with you during your study term, you may purchase Kwantlen Insurance coverage for them. Visit the Kwantlen Insurance Plan to purchase the insurance.
How long do I need waiting period coverage for?
You should arrange coverage for the three-month waiting period before you become eligible for BCMSP. This waiting period includes the remainder of the month you arrive in BC plus two full months. For example, if you are in BC on August 25, you would be eligible for MSP on November 1. In this example, you would purchase Kwantlen travel insurance coverage from the date you leave until up to November 1st.
Faculty and Staff
Faculty and Staff are also eligible to purchase insurance through the Kwantlen travel insurance plan. Please visit Kwantlen Insurance Plan for Staff and Faculty for more information.
