Public Safety Communications Program at Kwantlen

PUBLIC SAFETY COMMUNICATIONS NATIONAL CURRICULUM PROJECT

Kwantlen Polytechnic University has been engaged in a national curriculum development project for the past several years, working with British Columbia and Ontario agencies in RCMP, municipal police, fire, emergency medical services and emergency planning agencies. Skip Triplett, Former President of Kwantlen Polytechnic University has led this Kwantlen project team.

This project was funded initially through the British Columbia Ministry of Education, Skills and Training. It is an extension of our one-year pre-employment Public Safety Communications Certificate program, the only one of its kind in Canada, and one of only five in North America.

Using a completed job analysis based on British Columbia requirements we have expanded and developed new applicable curriculum for the Public Safety Communications Program at our Richmond Campus. In response to industry needs in Ontario we have completed a needs analysis process to assess the different needs of this region and adjusted curriculum materials to align with this information.

This curriculum is in a modular, criterion-referenced form and is intended to be useful for:

  • workshops
  • in-service training
  • short preparatory courses
  • upgrading courses
  • one year programs
  • distributed (distance) education

Program materials have been produced by a Project Team comprising industry content experts and Kwantlen instructional design experts and went through a final pilot process with the 1996-97 class. We have since graduated three classes using this material and conducted industry requested special training in a number of different areas including Flood Response, Basic Calltaking, Transit training, and to meet other needs.

We have established an Ontario Advisory Committee of agency and industry representatives to review our program blueprint and curriculum materials. We now have adapted these materials for use across Canada and beyond. Our objective is to provide a relevant and consistent set of materials for public safety communications training throughout the country, North America and the world.

Our curriculum is currently offered at these institutions across Canada:

  • Grant McEwan College, Edmonton, AB
  • Medicine Hat College, Medicine Hat, AB

We have assisted in establishing programs at:

  • Thompson Rivers University, Kamloops, BC
  • Malaspina University College (now Vancouver Island University), Nanaimo, BC
  • SAIT, Calgary, AB
  • Mohawk College, Hamilton, ON

Let us assist you to implement a program in your area.
