| Tipler (4th Edition) | Chapter 26 - 96, 97, 98, 117, 118, 119, 151, 153 |
| Chapter 30 - 72, 74 |
Optional but very useful. Create a MS Excel Spreadsheet to solve a set of n Kirchhoff's Rules equations. The Excel Matrix functions MDETERM, MINVERSE, and MMULT, as well as INDEX and OFFSET are useful.
AC Circuits
| RMS Handout | (b), (c), and (f) |
| Tipler (4th Edition) | Chapter 31 - 32, 37, 42, 80, 98, 99 |
Note: Use the Phasor Method to solve the problems in Chapter 31.
You may use MAPLE to solve the Handout problems.
Optional but very useful. Create a MS Excel Spreadsheet to solve phasor problems. That is do the vector of addition of 5 vectors to find the impedance and phase when a) current is common and b) voltage is common. Have the spreadsheet draw a diagram of the vectors involved. See the example below.
Complex Impedance
| LCR Handout | 25, 26, 39, 42 |
| Tipler (4th Edition) | Chapter 31 - 80, 86 |
Problems must be solved using complex impedance methods.
Optional but very useful. Create a MS Excel Spreadsheet to solve complex impedance problems. That is, convert various resitors, capacitors, and inductors to complex form. Have the spreadsheet do the complex math operations for you. An example is shown below. The functions COMPLEX, IMSUM, IMDIV, IMPRODUCT, IMARGUMENT, and IMABS are useful.
Semiconductors & Diodes
| Floyd (4th or 5th Edition) | Chapter 1: Problems - 16, 17, 18, 19 |
| Chapter 2: Problems - 13, 14, 20, 39 |
Transistors
| Floyd (4th or 5th Edition) | Chapter 4: Problems - 15, 16, 24, 26, 46 |
| Chapter 5: Problems - 8, 9, 12, 18, 26 | |
| Chapter 6: Problems - 11, 12, 20, 25 |
Optional but very useful. For each transistor bias circuit, create a MS Excel Spreadsheet to (a) determine whether a given set of parameters causes the transistor to be in cutoff or saturation, and (b) find each of the circuit characteristics given the rest of the set. Use the exact equations derived from applying Kirchhoff's Rules to the circuit.
