Career Preparation

Students with a Sociology background have the advantage of understanding human behaviour and relationships in groups, organizations and communities, and the broader aspects of social, cultural, political and economic life in both local and global contexts, which many employers consider to be a valuable asset.

Sociology students also develop sensitivity to social, cultural and diversity issues; and acquire essential skills such as critical thinking and problem solving, research, writing, communication, teamwork and leadership, as well as inter-personal skills. All these skills are important and essential resources for developing a career in a wide range of private, non-profit and government agencies.

While the pursuit of a career specifically in Sociology in academic and research settings will require a graduate degree, there are many career opportunities for students with a Minor/Major degree in Sociology.

Below are some of the areas in which students can find work and start a career:

  • Community organizations

  • Charitable organizations
  • Counselling services

  • Customs and Immigration
