Millwright / Industrial Mechanic

Millwrights install, maintain, dismantle and overhaul machinery, such as heavy mechanical equipment, conveyor systems, pulleys, mechanical clutches, gear boxes, hydraulic and pneumatic control systems. These operation systems are found in a variety of workplace settings, such as repair shops, manufacturing plants, construction sites, mines, logging operations and production plants.

Millwrights work from plans and blueprints, do installations, do overhauls and repairs which require the use of hand tools and power tools. The use of lathes, milling machines and grinders may be required to make customized parts or repairs.

Millwrights are also involved in routine tasks, such as lubrication of machinery, seal replacement, cleaning of parts during an overhaul and preventative maintenance.

Graduates from the millwright citation ELTT twenty-four week Kwantlen Polytechnic University program will acquire credit for the first level of technical training.

After completing the millwright citation ELTT program individuals will need to acquire employment in the field. Several employers in the lower mainland or in other areas of British Columbia are actively involved in training apprentices. Individuals wishing to identify employers who are hiring would be able to acquire up-to-date information from their instructors or by referring to employment websites – www.workopolis.com or www.workinfonet.bc.ca Once an individual has employment and is a registered millwright apprentice the expectation will be to complete 6600 hours of on-the-job training, as well as, return to a post-secondary institution of your choice for three additional levels of technical training. Refer to the Apprenticeship Training section for additional information on apprenticeship registration procedures and the responsibilities of the apprentice.
